Garlic Boosts
Lung Health in Rats
(HealthDayNews, 4/3/05)
David Ku of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, and
team, tried to induce high blood pressure in the lungs of
rats; then gave the animals powdered garlic to test its effect
on their lungs. The researchers found that allicin, the active
component in garlic, appeared to improve breathing, as well as
blood circulation in the rats’ lungs; whereas, garlic exposed
to heat to remove the allicin did not have this beneficial
effect. The researchers noted that, if a person consumed two
cloves of raw garlic daily, it would be the equivalent of the
amount that the rats ate.
