Fish Oil
Fights Smog's Effect on Heart
(HealthDayNews, 5/26/05)
Dr. Fernando Holguin of Emory University School of
Medicine, and team, monitored the heart rate variability of 50
elderly nursing home residents living in Mexico City, where
smog levels are high. The investigators gave half the subjects
a one-gram capsule of fish oil in the mornings and another
gram at night; while the rest of the participants were given
soy oil. The researchers found that heart rate assessments for
the soy oil group improved only marginally; whereas, subjects
on fish oil demonstrated “a complete abolishment of the effect
of the [smog] particles on the heart." These results suggest
that the omega-3 fatty acids in fish oil may protect against
smog-induced heart disease. |
