Exercise as
Good as Surgery for Shoulder Injury
(NY, Reuters Health, 4/26/05)
Dr. Jens Peder Haahr and colleagues from Herning Hospital,
Denmark, compared treating rotator cuff injury in 90 patients
with shoulder pain. The researchers monitored the results of
either arthroscopic decompression surgery or graded
physiotherapeutic exercise training and found that among the
84 subjects who completed the 1-year follow-up, both groups
demonstrated a similar degree of improvement in both pain
reduction and shoulder function. These findings suggest that
healthcare providers should not automatically recommend
surgery as the treatment of choice for shoulder injuries.
