Diabetes Deaths Worldwide on the Rise
(NY, Reuters Health, 9/20/05)
Dr. Gojka Roglic, of the World Health Organization reports
that revised computations of deaths due to diabetes triples
the original number, bringing the figure to 2.9 million for
the year 2000; thereby, establishing this illness as a leading
cause of death worldwide. Roglic and team say that previous
mortality statistics that relied exclusively on the cause of
death recorded on the death certificate were inaccurate, so he
and his colleagues used a computerized model and applied
population-based observations and other sophisticated methods
to recalculate the figure.
