Cranberries
May Help Keep Arteries Clear
(HealthDayNews, 4/3/05)
Kris Kruse-Elliott of the University of Wisconsin School of
Veterinary Medicine, and colleagues, studied pigs that had
familial hypercholesterolemia (FH), a genetic tendency to
develop high cholesterol and associated clogged arteries and
vascular dysfunction. When the researchers fed some of the
pigs whole cranberry powder for six months, the pigs’ blood
vessels began to function more normally, compared to FH pigs
not given the cranberry supplement. These findings suggest
that some component in cranberries may promote vascular
relaxation and improve blood vessel function even when high
cholesterol and atherosclerosis are present study, comparing
the safety of Celebrex to that of naproxen and other similar
medications. |
