Chemical May
Inhibit Male Sex Development
(AP, 5/27/05)
Shanna Swan of Rochester School of Medicine and Dentistry,
and team, found that increased prenatal exposure to some forms
of phthalate, a component of many plastics and other consumer
goods, raised the risk of abnormal sexual development,
including smaller penises and incomplete testicular descent,
in 85 infant boys. The researchers report that the subjects’
exposure, as measured by testing their pregnant mothers’
urine, was no greater than that of the general population.
These findings suggest that additional research should be done
on commonly accepted products to determine whether they pose
hidden dangers. |
