Brain Scan
May Predict Alzheimer's: Report
(Washington, AP, 6/20/05)
Lisa Mosconi of New York University School of Medicine, and
associates, scanned the brains of 53 healthy middle-aged and
older people and tracked them for up to 24 years. The
investigators found a link between lower glucose activity in
the part of the brain known as the hippocampus and the
eventual development of Alzheimer's or a related memory
disorder. Other research presented at the Alzheimer's
Prevention Conference linked the following factors to
Alzheimer’s:
- Low intake of fruit and/or vegetable juice.
- Less education, gum disease or stroke.
- Decreasing social activity in old age.
- Low ratios of a particular amyloid type in the blood.
