Blacks at Increased Risk for Enlarged
Heart
(HealthDay News, 6/6/05)
In a study of more than 1,300 black and 850 white
Americans, Dr. Mark Drazner of the University of Texas
Southwestern Medical Center at Dallas, and colleagues, found
that blacks were more likely to have enlarged hearts,
technically called left ventricular hypertrophy (LVH). This
racial gap in LHV rates correlated more closely with high
blood pressure than with obesity or other predisposing
factors. These findings highlight the need for proactive blood
pressure control among African-Americans.
