Vitamin C May
Improve Smokers' Blood Circulation
(NY, Reuters Health, 9/10/04)
Issei Komuro and associates at Chiba University Graduate
School of Medicine in Japan, studied 25 healthy men, 13 of
whom were smokers. The researchers used ultrasound to test
coronary flow velocity reserve (CFVR), which indicates how
well blood flow speeds up under high demand. The investigators
found that smokers initially had poorer blood flow than the
nonsmokers, but two and four hours after being given a 2 gram
oral dose of vitamin C, their blood flow was relatively
"normal." The scientists speculate that Vitamin C may block
the oxidative stress that smoking puts on the blood vessel
lining.
