Thyroid Tied to Heart Disease
(NY, Reuters Health, 8/10/04)
When Dr. Misa Imaizumi of the Radiation Effects Research
Foundation in Nagasaki, Japan, and team, analyzed the data
from 2550 subjects who had undergone thyroid screenings
between 1984 and 1987, the investigators found that heart
disease was more than twice as likely to occur in people who
had subclinical hypothyroidism than those with normal
function. The researchers speculate that the higher levels of
thyroid stimulating hormone that the body produces in order to
stimulate a sluggish thyroid to maintain an adequate output of
hormones may affect receptors in the coronary arteries,
thereby inducing heart disease.
