Two Signs of Heart Trouble
(HealthDayNews, 8/30/04)
Dr. Duanping Liao, and fellow researchers at Penn State
College of Medicine, analyzed an average of nine years worth
of data from about 14,500 participants in the Atherosclerosis
Risk in Communities Study. The investigators found that the
risk of heart attack for subjects with high blood pressure was
16 per thousand people per year; while the risk for those with
elevated LDL cholesterol was 12; however, when a person
exhibited both of these factors, their risk jumped to 51.
These findings suggest that the combination of high blood
pressure and high cholesterol may act together to create a
greater than expected risk for heart attack.
