Two Glasses of Milk May Up Ovarian Cancer
Risk
(NY, Reuters Health, 11/17/04)
Dr. Susanna C. Larsson of the Karolinska Institute in
Stockholm, Sweden, and team, had 61,084 women report how
often they ate dairy products, such as milk and cheese. The
investigators tracked the subjects for about 13.5 years and
found that the risk for developing serious epithelial
ovarian cancer was double for the subjects who regularly
drank two or more glasses of milk or who consumed four or
more servings of dairy products daily as compared with those
consuming less than two daily servings. While scientists
cannot yet explain the possible association between milk
products and cancer, some have speculated that the galactose
contained in lactose, a sugar found in milk, may be
responsible for the increased risk
