Too Little Fish Oil Hurts Your Heart
(HealthDayNews, 7/29/04)

Dr. William Harris, and colleagues at St. Luke's Mid-America Heart Institute in Kansas City, cite low levels of omega-3 oils as a risk factor for heart disease. The investigators report that, since requirements for omega-3 fatty acids, which is typically obtained from fish or fish oil supplements, vary from person to person, even people who routinely eat fish and take supplements may still be deficient. These findings suggest that a scale like the Omega-3 Index should be used to assess individual needs, so that a healthcare provider can determine the appropriate omega-3 intake for a particular individual.
