Thick Waist
Predicts Blood Pressure Risk
(NY, Reuters Health, 1/15/04)
Brazilian researchers report that people who are classified
as obese based on a waist measurement of greater than 35” for
women or 40” for men, are more likely to become hypertensive.
Dr. Flavio D. Fuchs of the Universidade Federal do Rio Grande
do Sul and colleagues assessed both Body Mass Index (BMI) and
waist circumference for almost 600 Brazilians who had normal
blood pressure at the outset of the study. During an average 5
year follow-up, the scientists found that abdominal obesity
was a better predictor of who would develop high blood
pressure than BMI.
