Tea Looks a
Promising Prostate Cancer Fighter
(HealthDayNews, 4/19/04)
Susanne Henning of the Center for Human Nutrition at UCLA's
David Geffen School of Medicine, and colleagues, assigned 20
men to drink 5 cups of either black tea, green tea or soda
daily for 5 days prior to surgery to remove their malignant
prostate glands. When the researchers examined prostate tissue
samples taken during the surgery, they noted a decrease in the
speed with which new cancer cells appeared for the men who had
consumed either of the teas, but no such response for the soda
drinkers. The scientists also found epigallocatechin gallate (EGCG),
a polyphenol in the tea, in the prostates of the tea drinkers,
suggesting that tea may protect against prostate cancer
