Supplements May Reduce Some Chemotherapy Side Effects
(NY, Reuters Health, 9/22/04)

Dr. Richard F. Branda Branda, of the University of Vermont in Burlington, and his associates, had 49 breast cancer patients complete questionnaires about their use of supplements during chemotherapy. The results showed that on average. the women were taking three daily supplements, typically multivitamins, vitamin E and calcium. The investigators found that patients taking multivitamins or vitamin E alone had a smaller drop in neutrophils during chemotherapy; while those with high blood levels of folate lost more of these important immune cells.
