Soda May Increase Female Diabetes Risk
(Orlando, FL, Associated Press, 6/8/04)

Dr. Matthias B. Schulze of the Harvard School of Public Health, and team, analyzed data gathered from 91,000 adult women over an eight-year period as part of the Nurses Health Study at Boston's Brigham and Women's Hospital.  The scientists report that consuming more than one sugar-sweetened drink daily was associated with an increased risk of gaining weight and developing type 2 diabetes.  Mike Jacobsen of the Center for Science in the Public Interest applauded the findings as evidence in support of restricting soft drink consumption in schools, but the National Soft Drink Association called the study "unconvincing and inconclusive.
