Smoking is Bad for the Brain - Study
(London, Reuters Health, 12/8/04)

Professor Lawrence Whalley of the Department of Mental Health, Aberdeen, and his colleagues at the University of Edinburgh, Scotland, tracked 465 people, half of them smokers. The researchers initially tested the subjects’ cognitive abilities in 1947 when they were 11 years old and then reexamined them between 2000 and 2002. The scientists found that nonsmokers tended to perform better on cognitive tests than did smokers. These findings suggest, that, not only is smoking harmful to a person's physical health, but it damages mental functioning as well.
