Selenium May
Protect Against Prostate Cancer
(NY, Reuters Health, 5/4/04)
Dr. Haojie Li of Harvard Medical School in Boston, and
team, analyzed data for 1163 men who had participated in the
Physician’s Health Study. At the outset of the study, the
participants had been cancer-free and had had their blood
tested for, among other things, selenium. The investigators
now compared these initial selenium levels for 586 of the
subjects who later developed prostate cancer with the levels
of the others who did not develop the disease. The researchers
found that men with high selenium levels were less likely to
develop advanced prostate cancer. These findings suggest that
selenium supplementation may slow down cancer progression,
thereby decreasing the risk of prostate cancer reaching an
advanced stage. |
