Researchers:
Stress Causes Forgetfulness
(Washington, AP, 10/28/04)
When Dr. Amy F. T. Arnsten of Yale Medical School, and
team, induced stress in rats and monkeys using chemicals, the
researchers discovered that, when a situation seems out of
control, the resultant stress may generate an enzyme called
protein kinase C (PKC) which blocks short-term memory and
other activity in the prefrontal cortex, the area of the brain
associated with abstract thinking. These findings may be
helpful in developing new treatments for illnesses like
schizophrenia and bipolar disorder, in which the PKC enzyme is
active. Scientists speculate that this blocking of the
reasoning part of the brain may have evolved as a protective
mechanism, useful in dangerous situations where quick
reactions are more valuable than prolonged thought.
