Fruits, Vegetables Created Equal
(HealthDayNews, 3/28/04)
Susie Nanney of the Obesity Prevention Center at Saint
Louis University, says that her research shows that, while
people recognize that a healthy diet should include multiple
servings of fruits and vegetables daily, most do not know
which of these foods are most nutritious. She suggests:
- White: Choose cauliflower over potatoes, onions
and mushrooms.
- Green: Choose dark lettuces, such as romaine and
red leaf lettuce, spinach, broccoli and Brussels sprouts
over iceberg lettuce and green beans.
- Yellow/orange: Choose carrots, winter squashes,
sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, oranges and grapefruit over corn
and bananas.
- Red: Choose tomatoes, red peppers and
strawberries over apples
