Not all Fruits, Vegetables Created Equal
 (HealthDayNews, 3/28/04)

Susie Nanney of the Obesity Prevention Center at Saint Louis University, says that her research shows that, while people recognize that a healthy diet should include multiple servings of fruits and vegetables daily, most do not know which of these foods are most nutritious. She suggests:

  • White: Choose cauliflower over potatoes, onions and mushrooms.
  • Green: Choose dark lettuces, such as romaine and red leaf lettuce, spinach, broccoli and Brussels sprouts over iceberg lettuce and green beans.
  • Yellow/orange: Choose carrots, winter squashes, sweet potatoes, cantaloupe, oranges and grapefruit over corn and bananas.
  • Red: Choose tomatoes, red peppers and strawberries over apples
