Music Pumps Brain During Exercise
 (HealthDayNews, 3/30/04)

Charles Emery and colleagues at Ohio State University studied 33 adult participants in a cardiac rehabilitation program. The investigators administered a verbal fluency test before and after two 30-minute treadmill workouts scheduled one week apart. The subjects listened to Vivaldi's "The Four Seasons" during one of the workouts. When the researchers analyzed the test results, they found that subjects had scored twice as high after listening to music while exercising than they did when working out with no music. These findings suggest that music increases nervous system stimulation and helps organize cognitive output; thereby, enhancing the positive effect that exercise has on cognitive ability
