More Than 8
Hours Sleep Too Much of a Good Thing
(NY, Reuters Health, 4/15/04)
When Michael Grandner, Dr. Daniel Kripke and colleagues at
the University of California in San Diego tabulated the
answers of 1004 adults to sleep questionnaires, the
researchers found that people who routinely sleep 9 or 10
hours nightly experience more sleep problems, including
trouble falling and staying asleep, than those sleeping 8
hours. The scientists theorize that too much time spent in bed
may create sleep problems and spending less time in bed may
help insomnia. On the other hand, there may be connection
between sleeping for long periods and depression, but it is
not clear whether the excessive sleep causes the depression or
vice versa. |
