Melatonin May
Prevent Migraines
(NY, Reuters Health, 9/2/04)
Dr. Mario F. P. Peres of Hospital Israelita Albert Einstein
in Sao Paulo, and associates, assigned 34 migraine sufferers
to take a supplement of 3 mg of melatonin 30 minutes prior to
going to bed. After three months, more than three-quarters of
the participants experienced at least a 50% reduction in
headache frequency, with nearly a quarter demonstrating a
complete response. Melatonin, a hormone secreted by the pineal
gland in the brain, also lessened headache severity and
duration. These findings suggest that melatonin may be
effective in migraine prevention.
