Mediterranean Diet May Reduce Inflammation
(NY, Reuters Health, 7/7/04)

Dr. Demosthenes B. Panagiotakos of Harokopio University in Athens, and colleagues, interviewed about 3,000 Greek adults and tested them for inflammation and blood-clotting. The researchers found that subjects who most closely followed a traditional Mediterranean-style diet—rich in vegetables, fruits, legumes, whole grains, fish, nuts and olive oil, but light on red meat—tended to have significantly lower levels of inflammation and blood-clotting markers. These findings suggest that the Mediterranean Diet may exert a positive effect on health, particularly on cardiovascular wellness, by reducing inflammation.
