Many Stroke
Patients Get Wrong Therapy in Hospitals
(HealthDayNews, 7/26/04)
The American Stroke Association cautions that, except in
the most extreme cases, doctors should not treat patients with
blood-pressure lowering medications during the first few days
after a stroke because they can cause more damage; yet,
researchers reviewing the medical records of 154 stroke
patients at a teaching hospital in Minnesota report that up to
65 percent of stroke patients receive treatment for
hypertension. The investigators found that most of these
patients did not meet the guidelines for such treatment.
