Low Vitamin D
Linked to Insulin Resistance
(NY, Reuters Health, 6/29/04)
When Dr. Ken C. Chiu of the University of California, Los
Angeles, and team, administered oral glucose tests to 126
volunteers who had no obvious symptoms of glucose intolerance,
the investigators found that blood glucose levels declined
more slowly in subjects with low vitamin D levels. In
addition, participants with low concentrations of D were
likelier to exhibit signs of metabolic syndrome, including
obesity, hypertension and insulin resistance, than their
peers. These findings suggest that a low blood level of
vitamin D may be associated with substandard blood glucose
metabolism, even when blood sugar levels appear normal.
