Low Vitamin
B12 Raises Risk of Birth Defect
(NY, Reuters Health, 8/18/04)
Dr. Regine P. M. Steegers-Theunissen, of University Medical
Center Nijmegen in Holland, and colleagues, compared the B12
blood levels of 45 mothers and their children with spina
bifida with those of 83 mothers and their healthy children.
The researchers found that the levels of B12 for mothers whose
children had spina bifida, a congenital defect in the
formation of the spinal cord, were significantly lower than
the other mothers. These findings suggest that potential
mothers may benefit from Vitamin B12 supplementation.
