Indoor Pool Air May Pose Hazard to Kids
(HealthDayNews, 12/8/04)
Swedish researchers examined 57 children and found lower
blood levels of Clara cell protein (CC16), a lung-specific
protein, in subjects who frequented indoor swimming pools,
compared to those who did not. Scientists believe that CC16
cells may protect airways from inflammation and damage.
These findings suggest that airborne chlorine byproducts
from pool disinfectants may harm these cells, which line the
smallest airways, and possibly lead to asthma and other
respiratory dysfunction.
