High Fiber
Diet Helps Spare Gallbladder
(NY, Reuters Health, 8/9/04)
Dr. Chung-Jyi Tsai, at Harvard Medical School in Boston,
and associates, analyzed the results of food-frequency
questionnaires completed by about 70,000 women who were
apparently free from gallbladder disease when the study began
in 1984. By 2000, nearly 6000 of the subjects had undergone
cholecystectomy (gallbladder removal). The investigators found
that women who consumed the most fiber were significantly less
likely to undergo gallbladder surgery than those consuming the
least. These findings suggest that a diet high in fiber may
protect against gallbladder disease.
