Green Tea
Component Kills Leukemia Cells
(HealthDayNews, 4/8/04)
When Dr. Neil E. Kay and colleagues at the Mayo Clinic exposed leukemia cells
taken from patients who had B-cell chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) to
epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG), a component of green tea, cell death occurred
in 8 of 10 samples. The scientists report that the EGCG disrupts the
communication signals critical to the cells’ survival. The researchers speculate
that further studies may lead to the development of a therapeutic agent that is
non-toxic to humans, but capable of destroying cancer cells.
