Genetic and
Environmental Factors Trigger Allergy
(NY, Reuters Health, 1/9/04
Dr. Frank D. Gilliland of the University of Southern
California in Los Angeles, and team, studied genes that encode
enzymes known as Glutathione-S-transferases, which mop up free
radicals and can even detoxify diesel exhaust. Common
mutations of these GST genes have been linked to asthma and
airway sensitivity. An evaluation of GST genes in 19 patients
who had allergic rhinitis and ragweed allergies showed that
subjects with the most GST mutations were more likely to react
strongly to other allergins after exposure to diesel exhaust.
These findings show that air pollution amplifies allergy
susceptibility, and, therefore, suggest that blocking the
effects of air pollutants with antioxidants —like vitamins A,
E and C —may also reduce overall allergic response.
