Genes Boost
Fish Oils' Effect Against Breast Cancer
(NY, Reuters Health, 8/6/04)
Dr. Manuela Gago-Dominguez of the University of Southern
California's Keck School of Medicine, and fellow researchers
at USC and the National University of Singapore, reviewed data
gathered from 63,000 Chinese adults in the Singapore Chinese
Health Study of diet and cancer risk. The investigators found
that women with certain DNA patterns that caused their bodies
to be inefficient at eliminating fish oil byproducts, derived
greater breast cancer protection from marine n-3 fatty acids
than their peers. These findings suggest that the byproducts
of the fish oil provide its cancer-fighting benefits.
