Fruit
Nutrient May Fight Resistant Prostate Cancer
(NY, Reuters Health, 1/2/04)
Brad Guess of California, and team, conducted a study
sponsored by EcoNugenics, a company that sells MCP, a fruit
pectin that has been modified to make it more easily absorbed
by the bloodstream. The researchers had 13 men, whose prostate
cancer had not responded to surgery and radiation treatments,
take 6 capsules of MCP 3 times daily for a year. Three of the
subjects dropped out because of mild side-effects, and of the
remaining 10, 7 showed a decrease in the aggressiveness of
their cancers, as judged by a reduction in the rate of
increase of prostate specific antigen (PSA). According to Dr.
Stephen Strum of Oregon, study co-author, the MCP may slow the
growth and spread of cancer by blocking galectin-3, a surface
protein that allows cancer cells to bind together. |
