Exercise Before Fatty Meal May Curb Bad
Effects
(NY, Reuters Health, 12/20/04)
Dr. Jason Gill of the University of Glasgow in the UK,
and team, studied 20 men, half of whom were normal-weight
and the other half obese. The investigators had each subject
walk on a treadmill for 90 minutes on one day, then eat a
meal consisting of foods containing a total of 80 grams of
fat on the next day. On a separate occasion, they had the
subjects eat a similar fatty meal the day after an
exercise-free day. In both cases, the researchers found that
the subjects’ triglyceride levels rose and their blood
vessel function decreased after the fatty meal; however,
these negative effects occurred to a lesser degree when the
fatty meal was consumed on the day after exercising. The
scientists conclude that pre-meal exercise may lessen the
unhealthy effect of high fat intake on the blood vessels.
