Depression Linked to Higher Risk of
Stroke
(HealthDayNews, 11/30/04)
Brooks B. Gump of the State University of New York at
Oswego, and team, monitored nearly 13,000 men over a period
of twenty years. The researchers found that people who said
that they were at peace with themselves were half as likely
to die of a stroke than those reporting frequent symptoms of
depression. While these results indicate a connection
between stroke and depression, they do not show causation,
since depressive symptoms may be caused by mini-strokes,
involving tiny blood vessel blockages or tears that can
affect the brain. These findings, however, suggest that
depression is a possible predictor of fatal stroke and, as
such, the condition should be treated appropriately.
