University of Kansas researchers report that pregnant women with higher blood levels of Docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), an essential fatty acid that affects the development of the eyes and brain, tend to give birth to babies whose attention is more matured, as demonstrated by their being less distractible and more engaged with toys. DHA, a natural component of breast milk, is now being added to some infant formulas.
