Coffee Tied
to Inflammation, Perhaps Heart Disease
(NY, Reuters Health, 10/19/04)
Dr. Demosthenes B. Panagiotakos, from Harokopio University
in Athens, and team, tested 3,000 adults, who had no record of
heart disease, for blood levels of various substances that are
associated with inflammation. When the researchers matched
blood test results to coffee intake, as determined by a
food-frequency questionnaire, they found a link between
moderate to high coffee intake and elevated levels of
inflammatory markers. Since chronic inflammation has been
implicated in cardiovascular disease, the scientists speculate
that it is the coffee-induced inflammation that increases the
risk; however, further studies are needed to confirm this
theory.
