Britain’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory Agency warned that consuming grapefruit with cholesterol-lowering medication—notably Crestor, Zocor (simvastatin) or Lipitor—raises the risk of life-threatening muscle toxicity. A compound in grapefruit can deactivate the liver enzyme responsible for metabolizing the drugs, thereby allowing them to build up in the blood. This suppression of liver function can ultimately cause rhabdomyolysis, a condition in which the discharge of deteriorating muscle fibers into the system damages the kidneys.
