Cholesterol
Pills and Grapefruit Don't Mix
(London, Reuters Health, 11/2/04)
Britain’s Medicines and Healthcare Products Regulatory
Agency warned that consuming grapefruit with
cholesterol-lowering medication—notably Crestor, Zocor (simvastatin)
or Lipitor—raises the risk of life-threatening muscle
toxicity. A compound in grapefruit can deactivate the liver
enzyme responsible for metabolizing the drugs, thereby
allowing them to build up in the blood. This suppression of
liver function can ultimately cause rhabdomyolysis, a
condition in which the discharge of deteriorating muscle
fibers into the system damages the kidneys. |
