Brain Inflammation Found in Autism
(Washington, Reuters Health, 11/15/04)
Dr. Carlos Pardo-Villamizar of Johns Hopkins University
School of Medicine in Baltimore, and colleagues at Johns
Hopkins and the University of Milan, tested spinal fluid
from six autistic children and brain tissue from 11 deceased
autism patients. The researchers found brain inflammation,
marked by abnormal activity of chemokines, immune system
signaling chemicals. The scientists cannot yet say whether
this immune activity is harmful or beneficial or whether it
is a reaction to something that causes autism, a direct
cause of autism or a result of the condition.
