Artery
Thickening Found in Obese Children
(Sydney Australia, Associated
Press, 4/28/04)
David Celemajer and fellow researchers at Hong Kong and Sydney's Royal Prince
Alfred Hospital report that ultrasounds of blood vessels indicate that the
artery thickening exhibited in some obese children resembles that of adult
smokers. As a result, these children face a higher than normal risk of heart
attack and stroke at an early age. With exercise and proper diet, however, the
blood vessels can return to normal over the course of a year, according to a
study cited by Kate Steinbeck, hospital director.
