Antioxidants
Appear to Protect Against Diabetes
(NY, Reuters Health, 2/16/04)
Jukka Montonen of the National Public Health Institute in
Helsinki, Finland, and team, tracked dietary habits and type 2
diabetes incidence, among more than 4,000 adults over a period
of 23 years. The investigators found that subjects who
consumed diets rich in foods containing antioxidants—notably
carotenids (compounds found in red, yellow & orange fruits &
vegetables) and certain forms of vitamin E--were less likely
to develop the disease. Scientists believe that antioxidants
may prevent diabetes by neutralizing cell-damaging free
radicals. |
