Antioxidants
May Fight Alcohol-Linked Birth Defects
(HealthDayNews, 6/25/04)
Dr. Kathleen K. Sulik of the University of North Carolina
School of Medicine, in Chapel Hill, and associates, gave
pregnant mice daily doses of ethyl alcohol plus a new
antioxidant, EUK-134. The researchers found that pups born to
mice supplemented with the antioxidant exhibited a 36%
reduction in limb malformations. These findings suggest that
antioxidants may decrease the rate of birth defects in the
offspring of women who drink during pregnancy.
