Combat Age-Related Blindness
(Chicago, Reuters Health, 11/11/03)
A 2001 study showed that supplementation with high dose
antioxidants-- vitamins C, E and beta carotene--plus zinc, cut
the risk of developing advanced macular degeneration, the
leading cause of blindness in older adults. Now researchers at
Johns Hopkins in Baltimore have analyzed the study data and
concluded that, if the 8 million Americans 55 and older, who
are at high risk for the condition, took the above
supplements, more than 300,000 of them could save themselves
from advanced macular degeneration and related visual
impairment during the next 5 years. |
