Vitamin C May
Ward Off Stroke
(HealthDay, 11/11/03)
Dr. Monique Breteler of Erasmus Medical Center in Holland,
and team, studied 5,197 Rotterdam residents who were healthy,
independent and at least 55 years of age. The researchers
tracked the study participants for an average of 6.4 years,
during which 253 subjects had strokes. The scientists found
that people whose diets were lowest in Vitamin C were 30% more
prone to stroke than those whose diets were highest in this
nutrient. Previous studies have shown a link between oxidative
stress and stroke and; scientists speculate that Vitamin C, an
antioxidant, may prevent stroke by blocking the damage caused
by oxidative stress. |
