Vitamin C May
Keep Ulcers Away
(Healthday, 8/1/03)
Based on data that had already been collected from 6,746
adults in the Third National Health and Nutrition Examination
survey (NHANES III), Dr. Joel A. Simon of the University of
California San Francisco School of Medicine, and team, found
that high blood levels of ascorbic acid (Vitamin C) are
associated with a reduced risk of being infected with H pylori
bacteria. These results are important because previous studies
have linked H pylori to serious gastrointestinal disorders,
like peptic ulcers and stomach cancer. The findings suggest
that Vitamin C may inhibit the growth of the bacteria. |
