Turmeric Shown to Benefit Ulcerative Colitis
 (VRP, October 2003)

Researchers from the Jack Bell Research Center at Vancouver General Hospital report that curcumin, the active substance in the Indian curry spice, turmeric, may protect against severe bowel inflammations, like ulcerative colitis and Crohn's Disease. The scientists treated a group of mice with curcumin and then induced bowel inflammation by exposing them to dinitrobenzene sulfuric acid (DNB). After 5 days, the mice given curcumin prior to exposure had a significant decrease in inflammation, compare to the group of untreated mice.
