Tight Neckties Linked to Glaucoma Risk
 (London, Reuters Health, 7/28/03)

Dr. Robert Ritch of the New York Eye and Ear Infirmary, and team, tested the intraocular pressure (pressure inside the eye) of 40 men, half of whom had glaucoma. The investigators had each subject wear a tight necktie and then tested him again 3 minutes after removing the tie. The results of the study indicate that the participants, regardless of whether they had glaucoma or not, tended to have increased intraocular pressure (IOP) after wearing the tight tie. The scientists speculate that the tie may constrict the jugular vein and thereby increase both blood pressure and IOP.
