Research
Shows Higher Cancer Risk for Flight Crews
(London, Reuters Health, 10/21/03)
Scientists at the University of Iceland in Reykjavik report
that flight attendants with 5 or more years on the job are at
greater risk for breast cancer. In a separate study,
investigators at the Stockholm Center for Public Health found
an increased risk of developing malignant melanoma, a deadly
skin cancer, for cabin crews. The researchers speculate that
the increasing cancer risk may be due to longer flights at
high altitudes, which expose airline personnel to more cosmic
ionizing radiation. |
