Red Wine
Prescribed to British Cardiac Patients
(London, Reuters Health, 7/7/03)
According to William McCrea, a heart surgeon at the Great
Western Hospital in Swindon, West England, the British have
twice as many heart attacks as their French counterparts who
smoke more, eat more fat and exercise as little. McCrea
theorizes that the French tradition of drinking red wine may
have a protective effect and so he prescribes 2 glasses of red
wine per day to cardiac patients. He recommends cheaper wines
because they contain more antioxidants than the aged
varieties. |
